Real Beauty

Earlier this April, Dove came out with an initiative called Real Beauty Sketches. The idea was to have an artist draw a person without seeing her, based solely on the person’s own description of herself. Then the artist would draw the same person again but based on someone else’s description; in the end, the women are confronted with how they view themselves and how others view them. The difference in the final results is staggering – every woman believes herself to look better in the stranger’s view than her own. The faces in the second sketches are all lighter, fresher, younger, brighter than the ones in the first. The concept of this initiative is that of making us realize, as the video shows in text, that we are more beautiful than we think ourselves to be. The problem is, just how much of that beauty is real beauty?

Warm Scents & Home Essentials

Since I’ve yet to organize all my things from NYC, here is a summary of my recent shopping haul upon returning to Rome. The house was closed up for three weeks, I used up all of my bath products while travelling, I bought a ton of new cosmetics and clothes while traveling… which means three basic needs: candles, hangers, cases and shower goodies!

The allure of Jo Malone

I love perfume as much as the next girl but I’ve never really given the whole ‘artisan perfume’ thing a shot. I’ve always just gone with my gut, tried the regular cosmetics shop brand perfumes (recently bought my second dose of Guerlain’s Petite Robe Noire) and bought what I liked.

Recently, however, someone very close to me gave me something special for Christmas – a bottle of Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir cologne.

I can say that I’ve been ruined for life.

Fall Beauty Rocks!

Okay so I’m still getting the hang of Polyvore (I’m late on online trends I know) but I was way too lazy to independently research every single item I wanted to include on this must-have list and put them together in photoshop, so here you are!

Urban Decay NAKED Liquid Foundation in Shade 2.0. Lightweight, full-coverage and adequate for oily skin (like mine). Lasts you all day – see that there’s no MAC powder on the set? Absolutely amazing. I’ve tried 10-15 foundations in my lifetime and I think this is the first time I’m deciding to stick to one.

Chanel Blush in Rose Initial is possibly my favourite blush ever. Slightly shimmery, but not sparkly, goes on your skin like a dream and doesn’t make you look like a matrioshka doll. Keep in mind though that I am quite pale and blush is something that varies a LOT from skintone to skintone – I can’t wear redder blushes and bronzer makes me look 40 years old. But if you’re fair or pale with olive undertones, believe me, this is perfect.

Urban Decay Smoked Palette. I have nothing to say about this. Honestly. You all know I love a good smokey eye and this is absolutely perfect. You can pretty much make any combination of smokey eye possible – dramatic, colourful, goth, soft brown hollywood glamour, cat-eye appropriate… It also comes with a sample of UD’s flawless and fabulous eyelid primer. But a good smokey eye, for me, can’t be complete without…

Givenchy Le Prisme Yeux – Acoustic from the new Acoustic collection, the Givenchy Fall 2012 proposition. I’ll be honest and say I bought pretty much everything from this collection, including the Givenchy Couture Mascara that you see up there. Warning – not waterproof. The nifty little eyeshadow quad, while way too glittery to use on your own, gives you four bold and super-sparkly hues that are perfect for pairing with a more matte eyeshadow. For example: take a greyish purple matte eyeshadow, apply it all over your eyelid and them use the glittery purple on the Givenchy quad on the outer corner and crease and blend it outwards. You can do the same with all of the others and the lighter sparkly beige is perfect for illuminating the corner of the eye. It’s a must-have addition for the glam rock lover.

The NARS lipstick I still need to order – it’s the only product here that I do not own yet – but it’s on my wishlist for October. I’m watching you, NARScosmetics.eu

The Givenchy Gloss Interdit in Lune Carmin is replacing an item that I have been in love with for ages, overusing it and is now finally reaching its last days – the Lune Carmin lipstick, from last year’s collection. It is perfect – was perfect – so to see this gloss still being sold, in exactly the same shade, gives me a little hope.

Lancôme Limited Edition Absolue Creme de Mat is seriously amazing. I’ve ranted on and on about getting a matte lip that doesn’t dry out and leave you thirsty even if you just had a glass of water. Truth is most matte lipsticks and glosses leave your lips dry and chapped after a few hours and they need constant reapplying. Not this one. It is, quite simply, fantastic. The colour is gorgeous, perfectly matte and covers your lips perfectly, leaving a velvety look and texture. The colours are bold, vivid and the best part is it stays on even after you eat or drink. At the end of the day, my lips were still stained in a dark pink and I look like I’d just applied a sheer lipstick. If you’re looking for the perfect matte lip, this is your item.

And last, but not least, an item I couldn’t find or add to Polyvore and that I am obsessing about:

MAC Satin Lipstick in Film Noir. It’s dark. It’s very dark. It’s also brown. Touching on all the right buttons. Stays on all day, is very very pigmented – if you’re thinking you can even see your lips after one coat, you’re wrong. It’s also remarkably right in the middle between velvety and shiny – it looks almost natural if it weren’t for being so amazingly close to black. But it’s not black. It’s brown and dark and bold and strong and absolutely perfect. I’m recommending this to everyone and anyone who might be looking for a dark lipstick – with Lune Carmin out of the market and black lipstick being a no-no outside editorials, this is your go-to slightly goth best friend.

Details

I’ve been quite busy the past few days so I’ve had no time to come up with a good idea for a post, nor have I had time to research about new artists. I did attend a Chanel photoshoot for the magazine I’m currently interning at, so after the magazine is out for sale I’ll be allowed to post a couple of my own ‘behind the scenes’ photos.

For now I’ll show you some of the items on my current Fall Wishlist!

As for the Dior nail polishes, I’m aiming for the second one from the left, called Trench.
