One of my favourite places to shop in Lisbon. Located in the blooming Príncipe Real area, it is one of very few luxury boutiques in Lisbon that boast a selection of more niche, researched brands, such as Comme des Garçons, Sophie D’Hoore, Ter et Bantine, Hache, etc.
When it comes to concept stores, Lisbon is slightly behind cities such as London (Dover Street Market), Paris (Colette) and Milan (10 Corso Como), which is to be expected in a place where luxury isn’t really in everyone’s reach – it’s hard to cater to a niche audience when the larger audience itself is already quite small. One of the most striking things about Espaço-B is how well it keeps up with the high level of concept stores abroad, offering a variety of niche clothing and accessory brands, design and lifestyle-related books, perfumes, jewellery and even some household items and technology bits.
The store itself is organised more like a moodboard, or a lookbook. Looks are put together on mannequins mixing several labels, with shoe and bag suggestions nearby. Pops of colour amidst white garments and a rack dedicated solely to mix-and-match black and white items, as well as monochrome colour-block. The decor is extremely clean, geometrical, linear and the tall ceilings and white walls give the impression of a large space, making the whole shopping (or browsing) experience relaxed and pleasant.
Particularly interesting are the fitting rooms, or rather, room. The customer changes behind a massive mirror facing two identical chairs – perfect for when you’re dragging someone with you to help you pick your outfits – and the incredibly spacious and comfortable fitting room is closed off by a curtain. No cramped spaces and tripping on your clothes, mixing what you’ve already tried on with what you haven’t, hesitating about putting your bag on the floor.
Every bit of this store, fitting room included, is designed to give you an enjoyable and calm shopping (again, or browsing) experience – not to mention the staff is very nice and always helpful, even if you’re on a budget. And, attention: it’s not women only. The menswear section, albeit considerably smaller, hosts a well-curated selection of high quality every day basics, hovering somewhere between a relaxed elegant look and a polished casual attitude.
